Lord Vishnu takes birth in the form of Vamana to Kashyapa and Aditi, a Brahmin family. The birth of Vamana was on Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month in the Shravan Nakshatra. This auspicious day is celebrated as Vaman Jayanthi.
The birth was of great significance in Hinduism. Vamana turns into a dwarf priest, appears before King Bali and seeks alms. Mighty Bali gets impressed at Vamana and grants a wish. Vamana seeks a space of three feet which was duly granted. Dwarf Vamana quickly transforms into a giant, put one of his feet on Earth, the other on Heavently spaces and asks Bali to show where the third feet space is. He crushs Bali into underground.
Vamana Jayanthi is celebrated by Hindus by prating to Sri Hari (Lord Vishnu). Donating rice and curd is considered auspicious on this day. Listening to story of Lord Vamana along with family members is done in the evenings. It is considered that praying to the Lord Vishnu on this day will free one from bonding and suffering leading to the attainment of Moksha.
